Old Pulteney 12 Years Review

Country: Scotland
Region: Northern Highland
Brand: Old Pulteney
Type: Single Malt
Age: 12 Years
Alcohol: 40%

Colour: Yellow Gold

Nose: There is not much of interest going on here. It's rather Musty and Salty with some Floral tones, Grass, Toffee, Sour Dough, light Licorice, light Orange Peel, light Honey, Dried Fruits (Raisins), Burnt Nutshells and hints of Vanilla and Pepper.

Taste: Watery Delivery with Dried Fruits (Raisins), Salted Nuts, Orange Peel, Pepper, Mint and light Licorice.

Finish: Middle-Long, Watery, Salty and Bitter-Sweet with Sugared Orange Peels, Licorice, Salted Nuts, Coconut Husks, Pepper and light Oak.

The Old Pulteney 12 years doesn't accept Water very well.

Rating: 78

Nose: 19.5 – Taste: 19.5 – Finish 19.5 – Overall: 19.5

General Remarks: The Old Pulteney Distillery is one of the most Northerly Scottish Whisky Distilleries on the mainland and is located in Wick (Caithness), that was once famous for its Herring Fishing Industry. Old Pulteney was established in 1826 by Sir William Pulteney. Today it is owned by Inver House Distillers. The 12 Years matured in air-dried Ex-Bourbon Casks and costs around 40/45 US Dollars.

Drinking Experience Straight: Below Expectations.

Conclusion: I am quite disappointed with this Old Pulteney. I tasted the Spectrum WK 217 before and thought it was okay although a bit too heavy on the Oranges perhaps. But this 12 years is Musty and Salty and does not bring a lot else to the table. The Standard ABV of 40% and the probable addition of Caramel don't help either. It's not very expensive of course but so are Bottom Shelf Blends. I expect more from a Single Malt! I will now set course for the 21 years that I will hopefully taste in 2014!

Update:

I Nosed and Tasted the 12 years again on February 10, 2020. On the Nose I now pick up some additional Apples, Pears, Malt and a hint of Smoke. The Nose is quite Light and Discrete. Lots of Malt, Yeast and Pepper on the Palate. Quite Salty, slightly Sour and a bit Oily as well. Increasing Bitterness on the Short to Medium-Long and Malty Finish. I sense 2nd and 3rd Refill Bourbon casks. I will honour my earlier Rating although I probably would have scored it around 80 today. The OP 12 years is okay but nothing more than that!
