Buying Advice: 😑 Good Entry Malt. Too expensive though!    

Colour: Golden Amber (Artificially Coloured)

Nose: Friendly but clean and rather underwhelming. He's Young for His Age as Albert Hammond sings in his Hit-Song "Air Disaster". The Sherry cask Finish is certainly noticeable. The Nose of this Royal Brackla won't scare off anybody and beginners will surely find it pleasant. I find Sweet Barley, Muesli with Apricot and Banana, Toast with a mixed spread of Butter and Margarine, Candle Wax, Resin, Sweet Apple, Honey-Melon, Toffee, Vanilla, Hay, Grass, Caffe Latte, Citrus Peel, Cinnamon, Ginger and hints of Floral Perfume and Varnish. 

Palate: Slightly Thin as could be expected at 40%. A 16 year old Single Malt deserves an ABV of 46%. The price of this Royal Brackla should allow this to happen! It all remains friendly and mostly Sweet with a few Herbal and Spicy notes for much needed balance. I find Creamy Malt, Toffee, Vanilla, Almonds or Marzipan, Honey-Melon, Sweet Apple, Figs, Butter, Sugared Orange Peel, Hay, Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Pepper, Clove, Milk Chocolate, Dried Herbs and a hint of Cherry-Flavoured Cough Syrup.  

Finish: Middle-Long and Sugary Sweet with a few slightly Bitter notes towards the Dry end. I find Creamy Malt, Butter, Vanilla, Toffee, Sweet Apple, Nuts, Milk Chocolate, Honey-Melon, Pear drops, Cinnamon, Ginger, Clove, Pepper, Nutmeg, Charred Oak, Grass, Straw, and Sevilla Oranges. The Buttery notes coat your mouth for quite some time.         

Drinking Advice: Royal Brackla 16 Years does not improve with added Water. Enjoy it neat or over a little Ice on hot summer nights.

General Remarks:

🏣   The Distillery and Today's Whisky:

The distillery was founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser and is located in Cawdor. In 1833 it was awarded the Royal warrant by King William IV. The spirit produced by Royal Brackla has always been a favourite of the Blending Industry. One of the first Single Malts was the 10 Years Flora & Fauna, released in 1993. In 1998 the distillery was bought by John Dewar & Sons (Bacardi) and most of the Spirit was reserved for the Dewar's and William Lawson Blends. In 2014, Bacardi decided to vastly increase the participation of their distilleries in the Single Malt market. They called the project The Last Great Malts of Scotland and it includes Single Malts from Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, The Deveron and Royal Brackla.   

The 16 Years was launched in 2015 together with the 10 - and 21 Years. These three represent Royal Brackla's contributions to the above mentioned Last Great Malt project. It almost automatically became their core range as well.

🍷  The Spirit:  

The distillery operates with two pairs of Stills with Lyne arms at various angles. They produce a Medium-Bodied, Sweet, Fruity and Floral Spirit. The Water is sourced from the Cursack Springs.

🌲  The Wood:

The Spirit for this Royal Brackla matured in Refill Ex-Bourbon casks before being finished in First-Fill Oloroso Sherry casks.

Drinking Experience Neat: Good but uneventful.

Conclusion: The Royal Brackla 16 Years is a typical modern, easy-going, middle of the road Single Malt that will, without any doubt, please many people with its uncomplicated structure, Flavours and Aromas. So far, so good you would think! But the price tag of this Single Malt is quite high and I would have expected a higher ABV of say 46%, no Chill-Filtration and no Colouring. That would seem a logical strategy for a distillery that is relatively unknown and wishes to increase its market share in the Single Malt segment. As it is, the Royal Brackla 16 years would be a fine entry-level Single Malt at around 50 US Dollars. At the current price level however it is simply way too expensive for what it offers. Let's hope Bacardi will revise its price structure as they have a potential Middle of the Road Champion with this Royal Brackla 16 Years.

Royal Brackla 1976 Review

Colour: Light Amber/Copper

Nose: Very Elegant Sherry. I'm sure this Royal Brackla matured in a good quality Ex-Oloroso Cask. The Sherry is accompanied by a light and pleasant Smoke/Peat/Earth combo, Malt, Nuts and Dried Fruits, Dark Chocolate, light Oak and Vanilla, light Spices, Floral tones (Heather), Citrus Peel, ripe Melon and hints of Cheese, Raw Meat and Leather. Very nicely balanced and surprisingly lively for its age. No Sulphur here! The Alcohol is completely integrated. The Nose is not really complex but elegant and discrete with a wonderful combination of Sherry and Peat.

Palate: Was I expecting too much? It's still a very nice Single Malt but the real magic of the Nose has gone. On the Palate I find light Smoke and Peat, light Sherry, Vanilla, Honey, light Licorice, Menthol, Citrus, Pepper, hints of Melon and Pineapple and a sprinkle of Salt. 

Finish: Middle Long and Dry with Smoke/Peat, slightly Bitter Orange Marmalade, Pepper, Honey, Menthol, Dried Fruits and Nuts. After a while light Ashes and Raw Meat appear.

I added a bit of Water and the Nose gets more Fruit, Malt and Peat. On the Palate Licorice and Pepper move to the front. You can certainly experiment with some added Water but my advise is to sip this Royal Brackla neat.

Nose: 23 - Taste: 21.5 - Finish: 21.5 - Overall: 22

General Remarks: This Single Barrel Royal Brackla is the oldest and most expensive Single Malt I've tasted so far. It was distilled in 1976 and bottled in 2012 at Cask Strength by Silver Seal Whisky Company/Whisky Antique SRL , an Independent Bottler based in Formigine (MO), Italy and founded in 1979. Natural Colour and Non Chill-Filtered. It won't be very easy to find and costs around 500 US Dollars.

The Royal Brackla Distillery was built in 1812 by Wiliam Fraser. In 1833 Brackla became the first Distillery that was granted a Royal Warrant by order of King William IV. The other still existing Distillery is of course Royal Lochnagar. Royal Brackla changed hands various times and was closed during World War II and between 1964/1966 and 1985/1991. Nowadays it is owned by John Dewar & Sons Ltd, part of the Bacardi Group.

Drinking Experience Neat: Very Good

Conclusion: What a pity I only had a 2 cl sample of this Royal Brackla. Because that's probably too little to fully and fairly judge this well-crafted Single Malt. For Nosing it's okay of course and I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect. It's not a complex Nose and the individual components are quickly determined. But what a pleasure to enjoy the balance of these Aromas without the interference of Alcohol or Sulphur. Sherry and Peat form a discrete but exciting marriage. On the Palate and in the Finish it's still a very nice Single Malt but here I miss both the excitement and the balance that I enjoyed so much on the Nose. There's no way I would normally spend 500 US Dollars or more on one bottle of Whisky. But if Palate and Finish would have been as great as the Nose, I might have started to save really hard!

Chivas Regal The Century of Malts Review

Colour: Golden Sunlight

Nose: Sweet with Sherry, Dried Fruits, Nuts, Dark Chocolate, slightly Burnt Toast, Honey, Marzipan, Watermelon flavoured Chewing Gum, Toffee, Oak, Baking Spices, Dry Earth, Straw and Orange Peel. The Alcohol is not fully integrated. The Nose is balanced but also rather simple considering that there are a 100 Single Malts reunited in this Blend.

Taste: Acceptable Delivery. Sweet, Fruity and Spicy with Sweet Barley, Toffee, light Sherry, Heather, Honey, light Smoke, Dried Fruit, Nuts, Pepper, Nutmeg and Orange. It's difficult to pinpoint the Fruit but it tastes a bit artificially like Fruit Flavoured Chewing Gum.  

Finish: Middle-Long, Sweet, Fruity and Spicy with Sweet Barley, Dried Fruits, Nuts, Pepper, Nutmeg, Ginger, light Smoke, Oak, Orange, Menthol and a hint of Espresso Coffee.

I added a bit of Water and you get a bit more Smoke, Spices, Orange and a hint of Leather on the Nose. On the Palate and in the Finish you find more Fruit and Toffee and a hint of Licorice. Try it out both ways!

Strathisla, the Home of Chivas might well be the heart for The Century of Malts

General Remarks: This unique Blend was launched in 1995 and contains 100 different Single Malts from the Highlands, Speyside, the Islands and the Lowlands. At the bottom of this post you will find a list with all participating Distilleries. The Century Malt will be difficult to find at the moment and you can expect to pay around 250 US Dollar. 

Drinking Experience Neat: Good

Conclusion: The Century of Malts is a good Blend. If only all Blends were like this! Still I feel a bit disappointed. I somehow imagined that a Blend of a 100 Different Single Malts from all the main Scottish production areas would create sheer magic. Instead I find the Century to be a slightly "common" blend of mainly Speyside- and Highland Malts with an understated Islands component. It's got balance but it misses depth and complexity. The Fruit Aromas and Flavours are a bit artificial. When the Blend was launched in 1995 it was sold at around 60 US Dollars and that was certainly a reasonable price. But I would not advise you to spend 250 US Dollars on the Century. For that kind of money you can find yourself a very nice Singe Malt or two!
